10.4 Accessing Diagnostics With NIM
There is a problem accessing diagnostics on a NIM Master from the PCI-Based
RS/6000 Systems. If you are using a graphics card with a display and a directly
attached keyboard is connected to the system, when you access diagnostics from
the NIM Master, the keyboard will not work since it does not get defined. The only
way around this problem is to remove the graphics adapter, and use an ASCII
terminal with keyboard.
10.5 Miscellaneous
There is a problem with the E20 RS/6000 using the uname command. If you run:
uname -m
it should provide you with the CPU ID. If your system shows:
C
then you should install APAR IX54465. This problem will affect licensing which
requires unique CPU IDs.
10.6 Hints and Tips
In this section, information is discussed, which may be useful to run your system in
addition to the information provided in other parts of this book.
10.6.1 Accessing System Management Services with an ASCII
Terminal
If you have a graphics adapter in your system, then System Management Services
will only display information using that adapter. If you have an ASCII terminal
attached and have a graphics adapter installed, nothing will be displayed on the
ASCII terminal during the firmware boot process. To be able to use the ASCII
terminal to access System Management Services you will have to physically
remove the graphics adapter from the system. If there are no terminals or graphics
adapters attached, the system will still be able to boot up.
If you are using an ASCII terminal, the following parameters should be used:
9600 baud
8-bit
No parity
1 stop bit
24 lines X 80 columns
Echo mode on
10.6.2 Power-On Passwords
The System Management Services programs include the capability for setting two
different passwords:
Power-on password
Supervisory password
